May DVD's
The DVD purchase this month is a mixed bag. Its what I call a gap order, most of my purchases this month were intended to fill gaps in the collection. But there a couple of major themes. There are a lot of new comedies, several movies from Brazil, the films of Jeff Bridges, and some series I'm trying to fill in. For the Coaches out there among you I have some sports drills and officiating training dvds.
Movies
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: One of the superior versions from Fox, before Universal had Serlock Fighting Nazis. Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, and Ida Lupino.
Against All Odds: An updated new noir version of Out Of the Past. Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward, James Woods Richard Widmark, and Greer Garson.
Apple Dumpling Gang/Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again: Tim Conway and Don Knotts in two light but fun Disney comedies.
Bad Company: An original under-rated overlooked Western with Jeff Bridges.
Best in show. A small entertaining Indy Mockumentary.
Beverly Hills Cop 2: Strictly for Eddie Murphy fans.
Black Orpheus: The classic Brazillian film of Carnival which won for Best Foreign Film in 1959.
Black Widow: Stylish and Steamy intrigue with Debra Winger as a Federal Agent chasing the 'Black Widow' Theresa Russell.
Central Station: The brilliant Brazilian film of a poor woman and the orphan she helps out.
City of God: Extraordinary portrait of life in the Favalas (Slums) of Rio.
Coming to America: Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, and James Earl Jones in a light romantic comedy of a naive African prince in Harlem.
Darby O'Gill and the Little People: Walt Disney, Sean Connery, and leprechauns.
Defending Your Life: Albert Brooks, Meryl Streep, Rip Torn and Buck Henry in a different take on Heaven.
Fabulous Baker Boys: Inconsistent but memorable movie of two brothers in a lounge act that take on a singer. Jeff and Beau Bridges with Michelle Pfeiffer.
Fearless: Jeff Bridges, Isbella Rossellini, and Rosie Perez in a Peter Weir movie of a man who's life changes after surviving a plane crash.
Gremlins: A comic Nightmare from Joe Dante with Phoebe Cates, Zack Galligan, and Hoyt Axton.
Gremlins 2: Phobe Cates, Zack Galligan, in the return of Gizmo. Don't miss the closing credits.
Jagged Edge: Murder/courtroom mystery with Glenn Close, Jeff Bridges, Peter Coyote, Robert Loggia, and an early appearance by Michael Dorn (Star Trek's Worf).
LA Story: Steve Martin, Marylou Henner, Sarah Jessica Parker in a whimsical look at trendy Hollywood from the inside.
Life of Brian: The other Monty Python worth watching. (Not for the easily insulted.)
Mrs. Doubtfire: Robin Williams, Sally field, Pierce Brosnan. Robin Williams does drag for family values, (It's funnier than it sounds).
Police Academy: Steve Gutenberg, Kim Cattrall, Bubba Smith. What can I say? It's the 80's comedy that spawned six sequels, a television show, and a cartoon series.
Postcards From the Edge: Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine, Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman, Richard Dreyfuss, Rob Reiner, Annette Benning, Vivid Real and Funny!
Private Eyes: Tim Conway and Don Knotts in one of their funnier comdies.
Road To Hong Kong: Bob Hope Bing Crosby in the Last of their Road to movies.
Road to Morocco: Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour in peak comedic form.
Road to Singapore: Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour in the first 'Road To' movie.
Ruthless People: The Zucker Brothers with Judge Reinhold, Bette Midler, Danny Devito, Helen Slater in a clever farce full of laughs.
Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Sherlock Holmes protects a bomb sight from Moriarty.
Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Sherlock Holmes Fights the Nazis. (Well everybody did it!).
Stage Door: The Classic Edna Farber play with Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Adolphe Menjou, Eve Arden, Ann Miller, and Lucille Ball.
Starman: Jeff Bridges Karen Allen in an intelligent Sci-fi thriller with excellent performances that carry a predictable plot.
Texasville: Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Annie Potts, and Timothy Bottoms in the equal to Last Picture Show.
This is Spinal Tap: The classic Rockumentary. Every rock musician/fan should see this one.
Tron: Jeff Bridges inside an evil Disney computer. State of the art in it's time.
Tucker: The Man and His Dream: Jeff Bridges and Martin Landau directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The Car of the future gets crushed by the 'Big Three'.
Twelve Chairs: An early Mel Brooks about a treasure hunt in Communist Russia with Ron Moody Frank Langella and Dom DeLuise.
Under the Volcano: John Huston directing Albert Finney and Jacqueline Bisset in a tour de force of an alcoholic Diplomat in 1930's Mexico.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Bob Hoskins Christopher LLoyd and every major cartoon from the 30's to the present (except Popeye).
